Your Miami Summer Bucket List
The sweetest memories of summers past are always the tiny shifts you make from your everyday life. Glorious summer days are always welcome in Miami. If you’re wondering what to do with yourself before the season kicks off, let our Miami summer bucket list be your guide.
Go Somewhere You’ve Never Been
If this is your first visit to Miami or you’ve lived here all along, the city is filled with hidden gems that may have slipped your radar. Take a tour of the historic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens or the medieval Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach. The Coral Castle south of Miami is an oolite limestone structure created by Edward Leedskalnin over the course of 30 years until his death in 1951. Leedskalnin carved the castle by hand using over 1,100 tons of coral rock. His feat remains one of the world’s most mysterious accomplishments. You can walk the castle grounds daily. Join HistoryMiami Museum for a morning cruise to Sliltsville on Key Biscayne. The two hour cruise is led by the museum’s Resident Historian, Dr. Paul George, who will be recounting the history of Biscayne Bay and Stiltsville’s storied past as a playground for the wealthy in the 50s.
Indulge in Summer Cuisine
Restaurants all over the city bring out a special summer-only menu come the warmer months. Expect lighter food and even lighter cocktails, with awesome deals and Miami Spice previews as the summer rolls into August. In Miami, Boulud Sud, Capital Grille, and BAKAN always have excellent summer deals, while South Beach’s Forte Dei Marmi, Katsuya, and Upland have special tasting menus you won’t want to miss. For those summer BBQ cravings, Sparky’s Roadside in downtown and Smoke’D BBQ in the Lincoln Road Mall never dissapoint.
Go to the Beach
When the weather is at its hottest, a dip in the water never feels better. Sink your toes in the sand, read a book, or show off your creativity by building a sandcastle at the beach. Get out on the water with a surf lesson. SURF Miami Beach and SoBe are both reputable companies that will supply you with everything you need to catch a wave. At The Sagamore Hotel, the beach is our backyard. Get to the surf and shore faster when you book your South Beach stay at our iconic boutique hotel on Collins Avenue.
Watch the Summer Sunrise
Indulge in some sunrise therapy and greet the day with a spectrum of colors to the east. The beauty of a Miami sunset rising over the Atlantic produces soft pink, yellow, and orange hues that are enlivened even more when you watch them bounce off SoBe’s colorful Art Deco architecture. The sun rises at around 6:45 a.m. in the summer months, but click here for the official times to make sure you don’t miss out. If you’re not an early riser, watching the sunset over the downtown Miami skyline is pure magic. Visit South Pointe Park in SoBe for the best views.
Do Something Outrageous
This isn’t all that difficult when you’re in Miami. We suggest attending a rooftop party at ROOFTOP at E11even in downtown or at VOODOO Rooftop and Hookah Lounge on Ocean Drive in SoBe. Take salsa lessons or show off your best dance moves atop one of Mango’s Tropical Café’s tables or keep it a little more low key (but equally outrageous) at Palace’s famous weekend drag brunch with unlimited mimosas.
