Surf Miami: Best Surf Shops, Surf Lessons, and Surf Spots

Miami may not be known for its consistent swells, but when the wind picks up in late summer, surf can be pretty decent. So ride out the calmer months and visit South Beach when the wintertime low-pressure systems get the waves pumping. From absolute beginner surfers to seasoned pros, there’s a place for you along Magic City’s shores. Here’s all you need to know about Miami Beach’s best surf shops, surf lessons, and places to surf.

Best Surf Shops and Surfboard Rentals in Miami Beach

First, you’ll need some gear. Across the bridge in Miami, find Miami Nautique (Pro Shop), JETSURF Miami, and Catch-A-Wave Surf Shop. For an experience like no other, visit Miami Beach Paddleboard in Miami Beach’s Sunset Harbour neighborhood to rent an eFoil board. No wind or waves needed for this board! Just fly over the water on the surfboard-like board that uses a battery-powered electric motor to propel over the surface.

Surf Lessons in Miami Beach

SoBe Surf is a great choice for people of all ages looking for lessons on how to catch waves. Make an appointment and meet at the south end of Miami Beach for your lesson (boards included!). The instructors choose locations suitable for those attending the class. SoBe has a sandy bottom that is ideal for beginners, so the lessons are usually taught in water that is less than 3 feet deep. Not only do instructors teach you the fundamentals, but you’ll learn how to appreciate the ocean, understand the sport, and get expert guidance about boards and equipment if you’re looking to purchase gear.

Best Places to Surf in Miami Beach

South Pointe Park

Once you’ve mastered the basics, take your board to South Pointe Park on the southern tip of South Beach. Just before the pier, you’ll find some powerful, A-Frame waves if you paddle out far enough. Beware the rocks and shallow shore, and be prepared to share the swells with other surfers. South Pointe Park is said to be the most intense surfing spot around, with surfers reporting to have caught 10-foot waves when the conditions were right.

Haulover Beach

If you’re looking for some space, take the 20-minute ride north to Haulover Beach, where you’re free to surf in the open waters. This clothing-optional beach is to be surfed ideally during low tide and when a north-northeast swell combines with winds coming from the west. Park in front of the Harbour House on the south side of the Herman B. Fultz Bridge for a short stay or the number four parking lot for a small flat rate if you want to hang out awhile.

No matter where you’re taking the plunge into the Miami waters, knowing the beach conditions can help you plan your visit. Check out Magic Seaweed for a live South Beach surf forecast.
