#SagamoreIsArt Presents Inspired By Masters...A Journey through Art History

Join The Sagamore Hotel as we present our newest art exhibition Inspired By Masters...A Journey through Art History. The exhibit showcases a wide range of contemporary artists who draw their inspiration from art history and past Masters. From Leonardo da Vinci to Keith Haring, Inspired By Masters is the perfect conduit to learn how art has impacted our contemporary societies to its core for centuries.

Artists from all periods of time have been inspired by art history. Pablo Picasso had an obsession for Delacroix’s Femmes d’Alger, which resulted in one of his most celebrated series of the same name. Similarly, Andy Warhol used iconic imagery from art history to create some of his most sought-after artworks; The Last Supper and Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci to name a few. Inspired By Masters invites the public on this journey through art history.

“Good artists copy, Great artists steal” - Pablo Picasso

The Portrait Gallery segment of the exhibition showcases Masters who pioneered key movements in art history. Created by local artists, the contemporary pieces span all mediums from oil on canvas to photographs and capture the impressive legacy of artists like Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, Magritte, Basquiat, Haring, Bourdin, and Baldessari.

Inspired by Masters pays a vibrant homage to iconic women in art history. Puerto-Rican Lorna Otero gives a photographic version to old masters paintings of women, while Sharon Berebichez shares joyful and floral portraits of women inspired by Frida Kahlo. Kahlo is portrayed by artists TEEPOP, Monique Lassooij, and Monique Lazard. French Artist Michele Planaud-Garnier, together with Gabrielle HB Abada, have imagined a powerful and tempestuous love story between Frida and Mona. This platonic love that crosses time and geography celebrates the intertwined inspiration between artists transcending time.

“Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away” - Frida Kahlo

Over 100 artworks have been selected by curators Gabrielle HB Abada and Sébastien Laboureau. Discover the works of 25 established and emerging contemporary artists from all over the world such as Jeff Koons, Speedy Graphito, Miaz Brothers, Dan Alva, Belin, TEEPOP, Alea Pinar du Pre, Monique Lassooij, Philipp Hugues Bonan, Robert Leone, Lorna Otero, Cedrik Cavallier, John Baldessari, Metin Salih, Michel Tessier, MPM, Monique Lazard, Raphael Federici, Piotre, Michele Planaud-Garnier, Tom Criswell, Michele Loewinger, Sharon Berebichez, and Maxi Cohen.

A series of Jeff Koons’ iconic “Gazing Balls” editions are presented together for the first time within a public art exhibit in Miami during Inspired by Masters. Koons cites old masters such as Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Pietro Perugino, Paul Gauguin, and Édouard Manet. Creating a dialogue with Jeff Koons, French artist Speedy Graphito, pioneer of the urban art genre in France in the early 80’s, presents a large collection of works celebrating modern and contemporary art, in partnership with Fabien Castanier Gallery in Miami.

Many artists created artworks especially for the exhibit to honor the Masters who impacted their work and lives. Urban artist Raphael Federici pays a tribute to Basquiat. Cedrik Cavallier painted his favorite Masters within their own masterworks. Michelle Loewinger reinterprets Magritte. Photographer Michel Tessier took photographs in the style of Guy Bourdin. Maxi Cohen created a video in Miami inspired by Turner’s iconic sea paintings. Piotre pays a tribute to Mondrian. Robert Leone drew a remarkable portrait in graphite of the late father of “conceptual art”, Baldessari.

Inspired by Masters...A Journey through Art History will remain on view through May 30, 2020. Entry is free and open to the public. Most artworks in the exhibition are available for sale.
